While the SVA is a social organization, we pride ourselves on coming together to better the community, whether on campus or off, around us. Here is a couple of the things we have done in the past:
- We partnered with Student Government to create a Veterans Agency within Student Government. Through that, we put together a panel of veterans to introduce veterans to the UT community.
- We partnered with Student Government in their campaign, Keep UT Hate Free. SVA members spoke against the stereotyping of veterans and the importance of separating policy from servicemember.
- We worked with the UT mental health center and Austin vet clinic to implement a program specifically designed for student veterans that might need their services while adjusting to college life and in dealing with PTSD.
- We advocated for a veterans center on campus, complete with a one-person point of contact for all veteran related concerns. *This is still under way and is set to open in Fall 2011*
- We honored Mr. Frank Denius with a plaque at a veterans day football game.
- Several members spoke on a panel for administrative members from universities across the state, helping to improve the services at their universities.
- We have sent letters/banners of support to SVA members deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan.
- We faught for student veterans to have interest free loans made available as they await dispursement of Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits.
