- We partnered with Student Government to create the Veterans Agency within Student government. Through that, we put together a panel of veterans to introduce the UT community to veterans on campus.
- We also partnered with Student Government in their campaign "Keep UT Hate Free". We spoke in order to decrease the stereotyping of veterans and the importance of separating the US policy from the servicemember that has to implement it.
-
We worked with the UT Mental Health Center and Austin Vet Clinic to implement a program specifically designed for student veterans that might need their (UT mental health center) services due to adjustment to college life or in dealing with PTSD.
-
We also worked with the registrar's office to create a website specifically for student veterans to access information about state and federal veterans education benefits. When I first got to UT, there wasn't even a web page dedicated to veterans education benefits!
- We created a display for Memorial Day (very simple with the number of servicemembers that were killed in past and present wars) that was placed in front of Gregory Gym Plaza. We had a priest come by and say a prayer. (After a couple of days, we noticed people left flowers on the display)
- We honored Mr. Frank Denius with an award on the field at a Veterans Day football game.
- We often send banners of support signed by UT students to UT military members serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.
- On a national level, we called our Congress representatives in Washington encouraging them to vote in support of the Post/9-11 GI Bill. So, this was a Student Veterans of America initiative, that our chapter supported.
- We fought to get interest-free tuition loans while veterans are awaiting GI Bill payment.
- We created a Veterans Day display in the 6-pack of over 300 American flags to represent the estimated number of student veterans on campus at that time.
- We are actively attempting to integrate the younger generation of veterans into the VFWs which are quickly ageing-out.
- We are working directly with the Dean of Students to build a veterans center in the student services building complete with a one-person point of contact for all veteran concerns.
